The head of the prisons of the Iranian government has announced that 20 Afghan women are imprisoned in only one prison in this country.
Seda Va Sima (state_owned news agency), announced this news yesterday (Monday, 29, August), citing Gholam Ali Mohammadi, the general director of Iran’s prisons.
The general director of Iranian government prisons has said that “95 percent of prisoners in Iranian prisons are citizens of other countries, including Afghanistan, Iraq, and Pakistan.”
However, the exact number of Afghan citizens imprisoned by the Iranian government is not yet known, but Gholam Ali Mohammadi added that women are also among these prisoners.
According to him, “20 women from Afghanistan are imprisoned in only one Iranian prison.”
Afghan women and other foreign prisoners imprisoned by the Iranian government have been accused of illegal entry, crimes against persons, theft, and drug trafficking.
According to the approximate statistics, during the last three decades of war, more than three million Afghan citizens have immigrated to Iran.
But the Iranian government sometimes declares this number to be six million immigrants. Since the Taliban takeover, on August 15th of last year, more than one million Afghan citizens have migrated to Iran due to the fear of being killed by the Taliban and poverty and unemployment. However, deprivation of the right to education and access to justice, and forced deportation are among the most obvious problems of Afghan immigrants in Iran.
