Afghan Women’s Protest Movements Alliance expresses concern and stages a protest over UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed’s remarks on the granting recognition to the Taliban of their government.
The Alliance demands an explanation from Amina Mohammed on her remarks, citing gender apartheid in Afghanistan as the responsibility of the Taliban.
According to a statement released by the Alliance of Afghan Women’s Protest Movements, “The Taliban has issued nearly 40 decrees over the past two years with the goal of removing women from society and perpetuating gender apartheid in Afghanistan.” The statement claims that women have been deprived of their basic rights, such as the right to work, study, and travel freely.
Protesting women are concerned about Amina Mohammed’s remarks and the agenda for the upcoming UN meeting in Doha, which includes a possible discussion on granting recognition to the Taliban terrorist group. They strongly believe that recognizing this group would be tantamount to sentencing Afghan women to death.
“Granting recognition to a group responsible for widespread violations of human rights in Afghanistan would not only be like sentencing Afghan women to death and exacerbating instability and crisis but would also damage the reputation of the United Nations as the largest and most credible institution responsible for protecting and promoting human rights,” the statement reads.
The Alliance of Afghan Women’s Protest Movements has expressed concern about the Deputy Secretary-General’s apparent openness to granting recognition to the Taliban and has called on her to provide an explanation to the women of Afghanistan regarding her recent remarks.
“We reiterate unconditional engagement and dialogue with the Taliban will only serve to embolden the group and exacerbate the crisis in Afghanistan,” the statement warns. “The world must not overlook the resistance of the Afghan people, particularly the courageous civil resistance of Afghan women against Taliban oppression.”
The women’s protest movements have called on the United Nations to firmly and unitedly support the people of Afghanistan, especially the women, against the Taliban group and to compel the group to respect the will, desires, and values of the Afghan people.
These protests come at a time when the UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, has announced a meeting on May 1, 2023, in Doha, which includes a possible agenda item of discussion on granting recognition to the Taliban.
